The Return of Punk Arcade

Saturday, November 1st, 2008

Punk Arcade is back! After spending almost 1 year in the hands of another owner, the arcade known for cool games is back under the protection of its original webmaster. While there may be thousands of online games sites on the internet, very few attempt to add that personal touch. Punk Arcade sports a variety of content categories in addition to the most common themes of action, arcade, racing and cool shooting games. Other features available are punk rock videos, game trailers, sports games, christmas games, puzzle games, retro games and a variety of other content.

This time around Punk Arcade will be adding the Punk Arcade Blog to include mini comments on new gadgets, software and other musings. And like most things on Punk Arcade this content will be added in a unique way. New posts are to be represented just as if a new game or any other media appears of the site. In addition to these new features, there are plans to start allowing users to post new content. This will be done carefully as to not disturb the current aesthetic of the website.

A post on Punk Arcade would not be complete without mentioning a few of the webmasters proudest finds. When you get a chance to stop by, be sure to play a Japanese game known as Boong Boong Panda. A tetris style game in a style that could only be done by the country that gave us the Nintendo and other cutting edge gaming pieces. Also, MAD: Mutually Assured Destruction. Another cutting edge game in the style of the old Missle Command. Both of these games are linked to the original websites as to respect theier genius. Just a few games from this proud website.

One look at Punk Arcade and its clear to see, this is no cookie cutter arcade website. Check it out and enjoy.

How to Choose the Most Suitable Online Casinos

Friday, October 31st, 2008

Everybody has different needs and wants when it comes to online gaming. Question is, what is the ideal gaming website? What makes a gaming website the most suitable for a player depends on many factors. For example, different players have different skill levels in different games. So the type of games offered by the website matters. Other factors include the following.

Bonuses offered.

If you are considering joining a website for some games, this is the first factor you should look at. This is because when you are new to the games, you want to minimize risks. As most online gaming websites offer free bonuses, you can play games and risk losing up to the bonus amount. That way, you don’t lose any of your own money.

Real time gaming software.

Reliable gaming software is very important as well. After all, you want to be sure that all winnings are credited to your account in real time as you play. And that you are able to collect your winnings afterwards. Also, the best gaming software should ideally be intuitive to use. That means you shouldn’t have to wade through pages of documentation just to learn how to place bets.

Number of games available.

Obviously, the more games available, the better. That is because if you ever grow tired of some games, or feel that you will have better luck at other games, you can always switch to another game without leaving the website. However, this is not so vital because most online websites offer all forms of popular games such as poker, black jack, bingo, and others. It is not uncommon to find sites offering over 150 games.

Do note that when it comes to choosing an online betting website, you have no lack of choices. There are many choices available in this highly competitive space. This is good news for the gamer because this usually means that the gamer gets higher bonuses. Bonuses are often used as promotional tools to attract new customers.

Different websites may have rules that differ slightly. Therefore, you may need to spend a little time getting to know each gaming website before settling in on a few that you like.

To help speed up this process, you can always visit review websites. There are a plethora of online gaming review sites available that will help you make better choices. These websites list all the required information that you need - like bonuses offered, deposit required, number of games available and so on. In addition, they also provide other useful information such as reviews on service and user experience.

Top Online Casinos website offer wireless gaming as well. That means you can play games on your mobile even while you are on the move at Go Online Casinos. You can find similar news on gaming review sites.

Free Online Games Help Relieve Stress

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

It’s true that online games can help relieve stress. But there are many types of online games available on the Internet. These range from freely available massively multiplayer role playing game (MMOPRG) to tiny Flash games.

Role playing games are very fun. You can interact with others online, and there are entire virtual worlds out there. These worlds are actually a duplication of the real world, except that you can do a lot of fantasy stuff like killing monsters or casting spells. In these worlds, there are usually active economies. That means trading, buying and selling are taking place every day. Virtual currency is used for trading. They are commonly known as gold or platinum. “Money” is usually in the name of some precious stones.

But although these games are fun and exciting, they are also time consuming. If you don’t have huge blocks of time available, it is unlikely that you will get to enjoy these games. As most people are busy with day jobs and a busy life style, these games may not be the ideal source of entertainment.

Fortunately, there are other games freely available on the Internet. These are usually Flash games. Flash is a plug in for the browser. Traditionally, this plug in needs to be downloaded and installed into the browser before Flash games can be played. However, almost all modern browsers come pre-installed with this plug in. So there is no need to worry about installation issues.

To play these games, all you need is an Internet connection and a modern browser. Mozilla Firefox is highly recommended. Some sites may require you to register before you are allowed to play these games. But most sites allow you to play for free with registration.

There are many types of games in many different genres that you can play. You can choose to play arcade games, adventure games, puzzle games, racing games, funny games, action games and more. The type of games that you choose to play largely depends on your personal interest as well as the amount of time you have on hand.

Many free games sites have evolved to become mini community sites. These sites allow players to interact with one another through special features such as commenting and rating. From the rating system, you can easily see which are the top games, and head straight for those.

While you play a game, you may get stuck sometimes at some difficult levels. In this case, you can often get hints just by reading the comments left by other players.

All in all, online game is not just an entertainment experience. It has also become a social experience. Interaction that has not been possible before is now widely available. In fact, many players have come to expect at least some form of interaction capabilities like commenting or chatting. These special features make the gaming experience so much more enjoyable.

Super Cosplay Ultra Wars PC Game Review

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

Super Cosplay Ultra Wars was created by Alicuu who did two fighting games. Both were released free on the Internet, but this one was the better one thanks if you”re a fan of anime.

Super Cosplay Ultra Wars PC Game Review

The game features a diverse group of otakus (Japanese anime fans) who like to dress up as their favorite Japanese anime characters and fight each other. Some are actually dressed from the start, while others change only when they use a special move.

Super Cosplay Ultra Wars PC Game Review

The game has two modes that can be played with another player or by yourself. The normal mode is the same as any other fighting game where you have to beat your opponents one by one.

Super Cosplay Ultra Wars PC Game Review

The single player mode is what you would expect in a 2D fighter. When your super gauge fills up, you can do a super special move. Otherwise, you just have to use your regular and special attacks to fill up the super meter.

Super Cosplay Ultra Wars PC Game Review

Now in the battle royale mode, you and the AI or a friend have to keep fighting opponents in teams of twos until you die. The opponents are randomly selected and when one dies, another appears quickly from any side.

Super Cosplay Ultra Wars PC Game Review

The graphics are pure anime with nice graphical effects and techno music. Some of the music comes straight from the anime shows. The super moves are wild and with great effects when they happen. The AI isn”t very good.

We still highly recommend this game thanks to its diverse cast of fighters, great effects, and fun factor. You can download the game at PCGameReview.net for free! Try it today for anime and fighting fans.

Earn money from online gambling

Friday, July 18th, 2008

The online gambling industry is one of the fastest growing online industries. Every year more and more people prefer to gamble online, and the money involved exceeds billions of dollars. This is why there are many people who earn money from online gambling. Some of them are skilled gamblers, while others are webmasters who promote online gambling.
The most common forms of online gambling are online poker, online casinos and online betting. Each of them attracts huge amounts of money, and there is an opportunity for everybody to earn something. The most common way of earning money from online gambling is by playing poker. There are many poker sharks who earn a living playing online, and many good players who earn some extra money playing poker. This is why many people join the online poker world every year, and the industry has developed a lot. Now there are even 3D poker rooms, where you can play poker in a very realistic environment. This is the case of PKR, the poker room with the best graphics.
Poker rooms offer nice incentives to players to sign up, like bonuses and freerolls. It is important to find some nice bonuses when starting your online poker career, because they will help you boost your bankroll. For example, if you want to play at PKR, the 3D poker room you should check out the best PKR bonus codes to make sure you make the most from your money.
Another way of earning money gambling online is from online betting. You can bet on almost any sporting event, and you can make good money if you have good knowledge about any sport. The online bookmakers have different odds, and it is very advisable to read bookmaker & sportsbook rankings before choosing the site where you will bet.
There is another option to make money from online gambling, for those who are afraid to put their money at stake and don?t want to gamble. This is an excellent money making opportunity for website owners. Promoting gambling is one of the most rewarding forms of online affiliation, and a webmaster can make very much money promoting poker, betting or casinos. For example, the Bet-at-home bookmaker affiliate program will reward a webmaster with 30% of the profit generated by the players sent for the lifetime of the players. Online stores usually pay for recurring sales for a year or less, but gambling websites give you the share of the profit for life.
The only thing we don?t advise you to do if you would like to make money from online gambling is to play at the casinos. You can surely win, and even big amounts of money, but you will always be more likely to lose. However, there were lucky winners who got their hands on huge jackpots of more than a million dollars, and there will surely be more in the future. Whatever the way you will get involved in the online gambling industry, you should always remember that gambling involves luck, so you should never invest more than you can afford to lose.
The experts estimate that the total turnover of the gambling industry will rise dramatically in the next years, so there is no need to worry for those who would like to try to make money gambling online. There will be more and more poker players for the sharks to feed, and more gamblers for the affiliates to recruit. The casinos and sportsbooks will make more money from their online business, and everyone will get paid.

The Perks of Free Online Blackjack

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

The game of blackjack is an exciting gambling card game that is played by millions of people all over the world in live casinos as well as on the Internet. The game is played against a dealer and the player’s objective is to obtain a hand that is of a higher value than the dealer’s hand without breaking 21. Casino blackjack is usually played for real money. However, there are many perks to playing free blackjack on the Internet as well.

When you play online blackjack for free you have the opportunity to learn how to play blackjack, practice and learn new strategies and improve your blackjack skills. Then, once you have practiced and improved you can start participating in real-money blackjack gambling in order to win big.

One of the best reasons to play free online casino blackjack is to learn how to play the game. Basic blackjack rules are simple. The dealer will give you 2 cards and take 2 for himself. Both of your cards will be face up and one of his will be face up. Based on your cards and the dealer’s face up card you must decide to stay or to hit, asking the dealer for additional cards to increase the value of your hand. Hand values are determined by adding together the cards. Aces are worth either 1 point or 11 points; numbered cards are worth their face-value; Face cards are worth 10 points each. When you are satisfied with your hand the dealer will reveal his hand. If his hand is worth 17 or less he will take an additional card as well. Hand values will be calculated and winners will be determined. Playing online with free blackjack software is a great way to familiarize yourself with these rules of online casino bonuses and practice playing.

Europe and MMORPGs

Friday, June 20th, 2008

One could easily think that playing a massively multiplayer online role-playing game is the same everywhere. But there are some subtle differences. I’d like to point out some of the difficulties you could have if you play your favorite MMORPG in Europe, which is where I live.

Internet Connection

Broadband penetration in Europe used to lag behind North America and Asia, and is only beginning to catch up this year, expected to reach 20%. Many European countries had state companies with a telephone monopoly, ending as late as 1998, and those were slow to introduce new technologies. On the positive side, these monopolies had often invested heavily in good quality copper cable, now enabling DSL speeds up to 3 MBit/s in many places.

The cheapest forms of broadband flat rates cost around $25 per month in Europe. Dial-up is relatively expensive, at around $1 per hour (and usually no flat rates offered), so broadband is really a necessity for European MMORPG forum players. That explains why the European market for MMORPGs has been comparatively small up to now.

Game availability

The European Union has 20 official languages. Of course many people are able to speak English, but not all, especially not the kids, and that limits the market for games that are not translated. Some MMORPGs are translated, like World of Warcraft forum Dark Age of Camelot, or A Tale in the Desert, but that usually means that every patch has to be translated as well, and thus arrives with a delay. Other MMORPGs are sold in Europe in their English versions, sometimes just with a translated manual, like Star Wars Galaxies. And some MMORPGs are simply not sold in Europe at all, like City of Heroes.

You can get US versions of games in Europe, either from special import stores, or by directly mail-ordering them from North America. Import stores usually charge much more for imported games; for example City of Heroes costs $60. With mail order, a European customer has to carefully check the shipping conditions. First-class UPS shipping gets you a game from the US to Europe in 2 business days, but cost $33. Some mail-order shops offer free worldwide shipping, but then you will wait 2 weeks before you finally have the game in your hands.

Server Location and Time Zones

MMORPGs that are not localized (translated) also often do not offer European servers. Playing on a US server is not really a big problem, but of course your “ping”, the time it takes for a signal to travel from your keyboard to the server and back to your computer, increases if the server is on a different continent. On ADSL, a typical ping to an European server is 30 ms, but to a US server it goes up to 200 ms. A ping of 200 ms means that when you see an enemy before you and press the fire button, it takes 0.2 seconds longer before you actually fire. If you are playing a twitchy game, in which every fraction of reaction time counts, that is bad news, as you will never be the “fastest gun in the west”. Fortunately in most classical MMORPGs it doesn’t matter all that much, because it is not your reaction time that determines how fast you attack.

An additional problem when playing on a US server is that there is a time zone difference of 6 to 9 hours. Scheduled server downtimes for patches are often scheduled for morning to noon in the US, as the technicians prefer to work during the day, and in the morning there are less Americans that want to play. But 8 am to noon in Seattle is 5 pm to 9 pm in continental Europe, and thus the patches often fall in the European prime time.

The same time zone problems make participation in events difficult for Europeans, whether scheduled by GMs or by non-European guilds. Everything scheduled in the afternoon or evening US time happens in the small hours of the morning in Europe. Who wants to get up at 4 am to participate in a game event? Even some European games suffer from this, as long as the majority of players are from the US.

A European MMORPG gamer will often play at times when the US servers are relatively empty. That has both advantages and disadvantages. There is less competition for scarce resources or mob spawns, but it is more difficult to find people to group or to trade with. It gets even more complicated when more than two time zones are involved. For example, Final Fantasy XI runs on Japanese servers, with many of the players being American, but the game not yet even distributed in Europe. A person that would only consider grouping with other Europeans would find FFXI impossible to play, but if he doesn’t mind grouping with Japanese in the morning and Americans in the evening, the game is nice enough.

Outlook

As you can see, it is not always easy being an European MMORPG gamer. But things are improving, as the rise in broadband connections makes Europe more attractive, and Europe is already rivaling the US for the title of largest market for computer games. The two big MMORPGs scheduled to come out at the end of 2004, Age of Conan forum, Everquest 2, Guild Wars forum and World of Warcraft, both will have localized versions and European servers.

Massively Multiplayer

Friday, June 20th, 2008

The game aspects of MMORPGs have been widely discussed here and elsewhere. But the success of MMORPGs is not based on their offering better game play than single-player games. Rather it is the interaction between players which gives the game the additional kick. An MMORPG is a wonderful 3D chat room as well as a game, but the chat aspect has often been neglected. Is a game really “massively multiplayer” if the players can’t interact much with each other?

Chat It is surprising how bad the chat interface is in the majority of MMORPGs. Far too many games have only one message window by default, which holds both the game messages of the type “Orc hits you for 3 points of damage” and all the different forms of interplayer chat messages. Whenever you are in a group fighting one or several monsters, the amount of game messages makes this message window scroll far too fast, and you are more than likely to miss messages from other people.

Some games make it possible to open several chat windows and then choose which types of messages go where. But that only works well if you can arrange those windows as you like, including stacked all together in one corner, with tabs to chose which window is readable at the moment. If you can’t stack the message windows, they simply take too much space on your screen, blocking your view of important elements of the virtual world.

Another big problem is the number of chat channels. Most games have channels for your immediate surrounding (/say), a wider area (/shout), direct communication with one other player (/tell), a channel for your current group (/group), and one for your guild (/guild). Other channels that would be equally important are not always present, for example a trading channel, or a channel where people can ask and answer questions. Far too few games allow players to create new, specialized channels, for example a channel for players from one country, where they can speak their native tongue. And even games that allow such custom channels often do not have a way for other players to list them. So a group of Swedes might create a Swedish language chat channel, but other Swedes on the server are quite likely to be unaware of that channel, because they can only find it by word of mouth.

The final problem with chat windows is that there is an inexplicable tradition of making them the least intuitive part of the user interface. Often the majority of options are only accessible via slash-commands on the command line interface. Options might be there, but they aren’t explained in the tutorial or the manual, so most players just miss them. Many are needlessly complicated, even in otherwise user-friendly games.

A series of tabbed chat windows, which is already organized in a reasonable way by default, easy to manage, and offering the possibility to create new public channels, would go a long way to create stronger bonds between the players.

Guilds and Groups A lot of the social interaction of a MMORPG news takes place in temporary groups or more permanent guilds. Sometimes, though, the user interface or game play elements get into the way of these important social interactions.

Guild chat is one of the places where players are most likely to have the feeling of chatting with “friends”. It is often a sense of duty towards this guild that keeps people playing a game which in itself wouldn’t hold their interest any more. So restricting guild chat is a bad idea. Several games (City of Heroes, World of Warcraft news) have caps to the maximum possible number of guild members. As players typically have several characters, such caps can easily be reached, preventing communication and thus the formation of social networks.

Communication and groups is a totally different problem. Group chat works reasonably well in most games. Where the communication often breaks down is in the formation of groups. I haven’t seen a single game yet with a “looking for group” chat channel. Many games have LFG flags, but these are far from perfect, as they give little information beyond level and class. Often a zone wide channel like /shout is used to look for a group for a specific task or quest. But as this channel is not very specific, the signal to noise ratio is low. If you are able to look for groups outside your current zone, the problem is often one of travel time to then reach the newly found group.

Trade and Population Centers Beyond groups and guilds, a frequent sort of interaction between players is the game economy. Players craft or find items they want to sell to somebody else, while others made money which they want to invest in items. They should read some Age of Conan NewsThere are a lot of different systems how the various games handle trade, of widely differing quality.

A trade or auction chat channel is certainly helpful. But if you make that channel server wide, buyer and seller might be divided by a distance too large to be worth traveling for a minor deal. On the other hand, more local trade chat channels often have too small an audience.

Sometimes players solve that problem spontaneously by informally agreeing on a place or zone which becomes the main trading spot. Game developers can aid this process by arranging for natural population centers. If all the players regularly need to visit the city for training or quests, the higher population density soon results in trading activities.

The best case is some sort of auction house or bazaar, where items can be bought and sold between players on a slower time scale, enabling them to trade when elsewhere in the virtual world, or even offline. The area in front of such an auction house can then easily develop into some sort of market area, where other deals are made face to face.

Less good is a trading system by individual vendors, whether they are NPC vendors or the players avatar in away-from-keyboard mode. Finding the one vendor that is selling what you want is often difficult. If the vendors are distributed over a wide area, they are even harder to find. And if all the vendors are standing in the same market place, they often cause lag and frame rate problems for other people approaching that space.

Summary To have the positive network effect of a true massively multiplayer game, the developers have to improve the communication and interaction possibilities between players. That becomes especially important with games that are following the current trend of enabling players to fight monsters on their own, without a group. If players are fighting solo, they need other communication channels to enable social interactions. Otherwise a game can easily turn into a single-player game in disguise, and it is doubtful that this would justify a monthly fee.

Study reviews MMORPGs’ effects to players

Friday, June 20th, 2008

Syracuse University, Joshua Smyth, associate professor of Psychology in the College of Arts and Sciences of Syracuse University, recently conducted a randomized trial study of one hundred college students in order to compare and contrast the effects of playing different kinds of video games. His findings: TOP MMORPGs tend to create both greater positive consequences and greater negative consequences than the more traditional single-player games.

In his study, Joshua Smyth randomly assigned the students to one of four categories: single-player console games, single-player arcade games, single player PC games, and fantasy-themed TOP MMORPG such as World of Warcraft

Professor Smyth discovered that the students assigned to the MMORPG group reported greater decreased levels of health, well-being, sleep, real-life socialization and academic work than the students assigned to any of the other groups. On the flip side, the MMORPG group reported a greater enjoyment from and interest in playing, as well as a sharper rise in the acquisition of new friends as compared to the single-player game groups.

While the Syracuse University study is interesting, Joshua Smyth has only served to verify what gamers have intuited all along: that no gamer is an island.

Talent system in Warcraft

Friday, June 20th, 2008

While I was on holiday, World of Warcraft was patched to version 1.60. In this patch the talent trees for warriors and warlocks were reviewed, several talents changed, and all players from these two classes got all their talent points back to redistribute. My main is a warrior, Raslebol, and my second highest active character is a warlock, Honey. Time to have a look at the WoW talent system.

The system is simple enough. Starting from level 10, and up to level 60, you get 1 talent point per level, a total of 51 talent points over your career. Every character class has three branches over which to distribute these talent points on Private Servers . But you can’t just choose any talent you want, at the start you can only take the low level talents of each branch. Putting 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, or 30 talent points in one branch opens up the next level of that branch. Sometimes there are additional requirements of having to take one specific talent before you can chose another.

So how do you distribute your talent point? Well, as you need 30 points to unlock the highest skill of one branch, plus 1 additional point to take that talent, your 51 points aren’t enough to get the best talent of more than one branch. So many people put 31 points in one branch, and distribute the remaining 20 points over the other two branches.

Raslebol, pre-patch, had 31 points in Arms, 5 in Fury, and 15 in the Protection branch. That was a rather common build, because the top talent for arms is Mortal Strike, which gives an additional attack. Before the patch, both the top Fury and the top Protection talent weren’t much good, and having an extra attack was just too important to miss. Fortunately Blizzard noticed that too, and the v1.60 patch changed the top Fury and Protection talents to give an extra attack too. Now warriors have a real choice.

In World of Warcraft private server Post-patch Raslebol has 11 points in Arms, just enough for tactical mastery and anger management, and 5 points in Fury, for the important cruelty talent. The remaining 35 points I put into Protection. That fits well with Raslebol’s shield plus one-hand weapon build, optimal for groups. Besides better protection this build gives me the nice improved shield block / improved revenge combo, the important improved taunt, the stunning concussion blow, and the shield slam extra attack. If I had wanted a more solo-friendly build, I could have gone for a build specializing in Arms or in Fury, both of which seem quite viable now. Arms probably better for two-handed weapons, and Fury for dual wield.

With Honey, my warlock, the situation looks differently. The changes to the warlock talents were not that important as for warriors. But I had decided that going for Affliction was a mistake, the talents of that branch being relatively weak. Demonology not only has the much better top level talent, soul link, but it also has the better talents on the way there. So my current build has only 5 points in Affliction for suppression, and the remaining 20 points (I’m level 34) in Demonology.

The combination of fel domination and master summoner means that once every 15 minutes I can summon a demon in half a second, instead of in 10 seconds, which makes combat summoning a lot more viable. And all my demons are a lot more powerful than those of warlocks who went for the other branches. So basically the patch saved me from spending money on changing my talents. Nice.

A friend of mine has put all talent points of his warlock in Destruction at the World of Warcraft private servers . The talents sure look good, but that is a matter of how you want to play your warlock. A Destruction specced warlock plays like an inferior mage, with the pet doing some additional damage. Aggro will be on the Destruction warlock most of the time, and rarely on the pet. The Demonology / Affliction warlock is a totally different beast. Aggro is on the pet most of the time, and the pet is typically the voidwalker, while the mob is slowly dying from lots of damage over time effects. A lot subtler, but slower, than the Destruction warlock. Both are viable, but I prefer the subtler approach.

The Universal Strategy Guide

Friday, June 20th, 2008

It may seem that a lot has changed in the last five years of MMORPG history. But a closer look reveals that at least combat, especially combat in a group, hasn’t changed that much at all. The same strategies that worked in Everquest in 1999 will still work in World of Warcraft in 2004, as well as in most character class based games in between. But these universal strategies aren’t written down anywhere, certainly not in the game manuals. No game tutorial explains them, and most veterans simply assume that everybody already knows them. This makes it hard for new players to join these games, because learning these strategies in game involves a lot of being shouted at and being called a n00b. This Universal Strategy Guide is meant to help new players to know the most basic combat strategies. And we invite veterans to add to it by way of our forum.

Group combat in MMORPGs is all about controlling which group member gets attacked. A monster facing a group of several players has to decide whom to attack, and does that based on a hidden number called “agro” (short for aggravation), or “hate”. The aim of nearly all group strategies is to manipulate hate so that the monster makes a poor choice of whom to attack.

This worst possible choice for the monster to attack, from the point of view of the monster, is the group’s tank. A tank is some sort of heavily armored warrior whose armor will absorb the monster’s attacks, reducing their damage. The very first thing any group has to agree on is who the tank is.

Besides heavy armor, the tank also needs some way to increase the hate on him. Most games give their tank classes a skill named taunt. The job of the tank is to taunt as much as he possibly can, all of the time, so the monster only hits him, and not the much lighter armored other characters.

Obviously the tank wouldn’t survive this long without a healer. The healer’s job is simply to heal the tank. Ideally, the healer should never have to heal anyone else, as the tank is supposed to keep all the hate and thus be the focus of all attacks. If the monster hits somebody else, the correct response of the group is for the tank to taunt the monster off the other player, and for the healer to keep healing the tank, unless the other player has to be saved from death. It is more important to keep the tank alive than to keep the whole group at maximum health. Healing itself generates hate, so the healer has to experiment how to achieve maximum healing while producing the minimum of hate directed at himself. Spells that heal over time, regeneration, are often very effective in this.

A group can have more than one tank and more than one healer. In this case, they should agree before combat starts who are the main tank and the main healer.

Most of the other players in the group will be damage dealers. Their job is it to deal the maximum amount of damage to the monster, while avoiding drawing too much hate onto themselves. This is especially difficult for spellcasters with many offensive spells. They often have to make deliberate pauses, because if they just cast all their spells one after another, they would produce too much hate, and the monster would go after them instead of the tank. But they can unleash their most powerful spell when the monster is nearly dead, as dead enemies don’t hate any more.

It often comes to some surprise to new players that tanks are not very good at dealing damage. Many games have other melee fighters that are considerably lighter armored, but deal more damage than the tank.

This is done due to game balance, because if the same character class had both the best offence and the best defense, not many people would play anything else. Before choosing a melee character class, one should find out whether this class is more a tank, or more a damage dealer, and then behave accordingly.

If the group is fighting more than one monster at a time, things get more complicated. This often requires one group member with “crowd control” skills. These are spells that temporarily confuse one or several monsters, making them not attack anybody unless they are attacked themselves.

Ideally all but one monster are thus controlled (”mezzed”), and the group concentrates on the one monster that is still attacking. Needless to say, nobody should start an attack that affects the whole area and thus wakes up all the mezzed monsters.

Without crowd control, combat is more difficult, but not impossible, as long as the group has more than one tank. The tanks keep all the hate on them, the healers heal them, and the damage dealers concentrate all on the same monster, the one on the main tank. It is much better to kill the monsters one by one than to distribute the damage over all of them.

One final job for the group is to designate a puller. The group should ideally stay at a safe place, away from all monsters. The puller’s job is to “pull” monsters towards the group, so they can be killed. The puller could either be the main tank, as pulling already produces hate.

Or it could be somebody with some form of ranged combat, who pulls the monsters from a distance, and then the tank taunts the monster of him. It is very important that there be only one designated puller in a group, and that nobody else pulls a monster out of boredom. Two or more people pulling monsters from different directions at the same time is a sure way to get the whole group wiped out.

With these universal strategies, one is well armed for most FREE MMORPGs out there. In the harsher games, like Everquest, such tactics are the only way to survive. But even in easier games this strategies are very useful, as they will allow the group to kill more and harder monsters than they could do without them.

UltimaOnline - KingdomReborn

Friday, June 20th, 2008

Thanks to Lunedust for the information that UO is planning a complete revamp of the game client, called Ultima Online: Kingdom Reborn. There isn’t very much information about it out yet, but the website states:

We are completely re-building the Ultima Online client with new graphics and a new easier-to-use interface. It is an in-place upgrade. That means you will be able to keep your characters, items, houses and everything else you’ve earned over the past nine years. We are committed to maintaining extremely low system specs. They will be higher than what UO launched with in 1997, but will still be far lower than almost any other MMORPG on the market. The launch will happen in 2007. There are many, many more surprises in store.

In its heyday Ultima Online had 250,000 subscribers, but as it was one of the first big commercial free MMORPGs it is getting a bit old now, and subscriptions have decreased by half. Obviously the developers think that this can be reversed by bringing the graphics up to scratch.

Ultima Online has a long and rocky history. When it came out the game offered unlimited, non-consensual PvP, where everybody could attack and kill everybody, and even steal his items. There were player-killers and people who hunted them, thieves and player-run police forces. And a part of the population liked the game that way. But a larger part of the population didn’t appreciate being ganked and robbed by some player killer, and lots of players were leaving the game because of that. So in April 2000 the game was changed and effectively doubled in size. From now on there was one PvP half of the world, called Felucca, and one non-PvP half called Trammel. The two halves were identical in size and shape, just the PvP half was painted in a darker look. Unfortunately for the PvP fans, over 90% of the population moved to the non-PvP half. Felucca became a pretty much deserted place. The player killers left because there were no weak victims to be ganked, and the player-killer hunters ran out of gankers to hunt. To this day you can find people on private servers message boards grumbling about how the introduction of Trammel “destroyed” UO.

I haven’t played Ultima Online for many years, so I can’t really say in what state the game is in now. But when I left UO was still famous for being more open-ended than other free MMOs. There are no levels in UO, just skill levels, and skills are capped at a maximum skill of 100 per skill, with a second cap of 700 over all skills. Thus you could max out 7 skills, but then you would be unable to advance any further without unlearning a skill. As these skills could well be tailoring or blacksmithing, it was totally possible in UO to create characters that were pure crafters, without any adventuring skills. With UO having player housing, and the ability to turn houses into shops, the game had a player-run economy, which often was very interesting. But the lack of levels, quests, raids, and other staples of the MMORPG fare are not for everybody.

Electronic Arts, the owners of Ultima Online, managed to announce a sequel and then cancel it 2 years later not once, but twice. Both UO2 and Ultima X: Odyssey never saw the light of day, both cancelled because the original game was still making money, and EA feared a sequel might hurt the original game. The now announced Ultima Online: Kingdom Reborn is not a new game, but just a new graphical interface to the old game, and probably some other additions and improvements. A previous attempt to upgrade UO to 3D graphics wasn’t totally successful, as the 3D client was buggy and had performance problems. So people are understandably sceptical whether the new client will be better, and whether Ultima Online with new graphics can bring back lots of new players to a rather old game. I personally would have preferred a third attempt at a sequel, and a closing down of the old game. Major conversions of old games rarely work, the “New Game Enhancements” (NGE) conversion of Star Wars Galaxies was a major catastrophe and rather accelerated than halted the exodus of players. But I sure wish the UO development team the best of luck, maybe they can prove that updating an old MMORPG can work.

What exactly are we paying for

Friday, June 20th, 2008

The substantial changes to Star Wars Galaxies are making headlines, in the New York Times, Wired, and Yahoo. The story is always the same, of long-time players of SWG leaving the game in droves because of the changes of the New Game Enhancements (NGE) patch. People are demanding their money back for the latest SWG expansion Trials of Obi-Wan, because many of the features added in that expansion have been made obsolete by the NGE patch two weeks later. So we have to ask ourselves what we are actually paying for.

Many of the people leaving found that they had developed their characters along a path that wasn’t supported any more by the new version of the game. Of the multitude of 32 skill trees and combinations possibilities, only 9 character classes remain, and professions like “creature handler” simply don’t exist any more. Imagine you log into World of Warcraft and get a patch message that the paladin and shaman classes have been discontinued due to balance issues, and that your character has been transformed into a priest or warrior instead. You would be as upset as the current SWG players.

Or more extreme, imagine any MMORPGs having a serious computer crash which erases all characters including backup. Your account is still there, the world is still there and unchanged, but you will have to create a new character and re-start from zero. I think many people would leave the game in question at that point. Because a major part of the game in a World of Warcraft is developing your avatar, and if your previous investment of time and effort in that development is erased, there is no more interest in continueing to play. We are paying for a certain continuity, a persistent world. We are certainly happy if new content is added to this world, but we don’t want it fundamentally changed.

Of course the game developers of Star Wars Galaxies aren’t totally unaware of that. But it seems that the game was going downhill before, and they hoped that they could win more new players for their new, faster, more accessible SWG than they are losing old players because of the changes. Obviously the horror stories in the press don’t help. Nor do the numerous bugs that the NGE introduced. Creating a lot of hype for a game from 2003 was going to be difficult anyway. SOE isn’t releasing any numbers, but I don’t see SWG in any top 10 games sales charts, and Amazon lists the SWG Starter Kit at rank #999 in the Computer & Video Games category (where WoW is at rank #10). It is possible that SWG will crash and burn now, and be shut down in a year or so.

The scary thing is that both being shut down and being changed into something very different is a definitive risk with any MMORPG. I don’t usually play old computer games, but at least I *could* still play them if I wanted. People that would want to play the original SWG can’t do that. And nobody can play Earth and Beyond any more. Age of Conan have been hailed as persistent worlds, but in reality they are more transient than other games.

What makes Age of Conan successful

Friday, June 20th, 2008

A reader was asking for my opinion on why Age of Conan was so successful, much more so than Vanguard or Lord of the Rings Online. I believe at the heart of it is the combat system. While for an outsider the combat in Age of Conan Cheats doesn’t look much different than the combat in WoW, using a very similar interface and killing monsters by hitting hotkeys, in practice the AoC combat is very different.

It is a lot fast, and the combo-based special attacks and the shields give you the illusion of interactivity. Whenever I go back to WoW, I start to wonder why by weapon swings only hit one of the mobs in front of me, the AoC way of hitting everything in your path is so much more intuitive. Combat is Age of Conan is fast, furious, and fun.

I tend to separate features in an MMORPG into two categories: basic repetitive units (like combat or crafting), and content (mobs, zones, quests, etc.). Age of Conan Cheats wins on the strength of the basic repetitive unit of combat, because that is where it plays “new”. On the side of content I’d say AoC is better than Vanguard, but not quite as good as LotRO. LotRO used its license a lot better. Most of AoC isn’t strictly Conan related, but could be any other random fantasy game.

I don’t think that the “mature” content drives sales much. For me it wouldn’t make any difference if a patch tomorrow removed all the gore and nipples. But then “age of conan nudity” is *still* the top search term that leads people to my blog, so I could be wrong on that. Maybe one has to be immature to enjoy mature content.

Finally the release date helped. Both Vanguard and LotRO released too close to The Burning Crusade, one just before, one just after. Age of Conan Forum released at a time when no great other MMORPG had been released for a while, and the next upcoming releases are still half a year away. There was a real vaccuum in the market, and AoC filled it.

Free Online Arcade Games

Monday, June 9th, 2008

Arcade games are hugely popular among the teenagers today. The coin-operated machine games have indeed taken the young generation by storm in the contemporary times. The most popular arcade games include merchandisers, redemption games, video games and pinball machines. They are mostly installed in the family entertainment centers, pubs, restaurants and video arcades.

The history of the first ever arcade games can be traced back to the times when the games were merely played in the amusement parks and included games like ball toss games, shooting galleries, and such others. The recent arcade games of the twentieth century however include the combination of two or more classic video games.

The advancement, which the world of technology witnessed in the recent years, has also seen a major rise in the online games and free arcade games have become a favorite pastime of most of the teenagers. But the only problem that continues to persist with the existence of the online games is that they loose their value soon after their release. Once a new game gets released in the market the older version is not longer favored. However there is a good note for the serious gamers. The resale value in the industry of online games is very good and that really adds a bit of weight to the ever changing history of online games.

As for the free arcade games, there are a host of gaming websites which offer an intensive collection. The variety of these games often confuses the players and they remain awestruck by the choices offered to them, for instance, car racing games, casino games, fighting games, shooting games, addicting games, political games, puzzle games and many others. The choices are more than the players could ever ask for. So all you addicted players out there just log online and explore the world of arcade games.

Win Sports Bets At 97% Success Rate With This New Gambling System

Friday, April 18th, 2008

Did you know that you can use a system in sports betting to easily win large amounts based purely on statistics?

Sports betting champ system is a new unique betting system. The author is John Morrison. He has a PHD Degree in Statistics. Johns drive comes from already being enthusiastic in sports himself, as a result of this he can apply this special knowledge to a sporting database and devise a system which returns positive results nearly every time.

When John put this to the test he found he had a excessive winning rate, proving 97% of the time. He named this system Sports Betting Champ. This winning formula is unique. No one before had put this to the test. This system was obviously designed for people to make money fast!

If starting out, when using this sports betting system it is recommended to place small bets to see how this works, once confident you can place higher stakes and rake in some real money. John explains how to make this transition in the best possible way. The system is intended to be easy to use - being set up in hours.

If one is wondering if you need to be a genius in statistics or maths, this need not be an issue. John has done all the hard work for you, the most incredible part about it is you neither have to be knowledgeable about basketball or baseball to become a successful sports better.

Sports Betting Champ is a consistent wining formula for the NBA (Basketball) and MBL (Baseball), the winning percentage is 97%, it also proves consistent success in the NFL (FC) system. This system does not rely on chance or fate. It is purely based on scientific research and calculations.

If you apply Johns statistical winning formula to these sports correctly, the rewards are inevitable. In some cases you can be winning rather large amounts frequently.

Most people who bet on sports, always become the looser. Placing bets on sports to the average person is a game of chance. John decided to correct this and give the betting office some pain!

At the moment Johns statistics system is a totally legal strategy but controversy is arising, obviously such a successful system is under watch by many authorities.

On John’s Website there are many videos and letters of people who are sharing their success stories about it too.

The cost to sign up to Sports Betting Champ is $197. This being a very small price to pay for the amount of research and time that has been put in, furthermore this should be regained in your first winning bet!
